RAYMOND J. WERNER
Raymond J. Werner, 80, passed away on January 25, 2009 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh following a brave battle with COPD.
The son of the late Frederick Albert Werner and Della Agnes (Monaghan) Werner, he was born January 15, 1929 in New York City.
Raymond joined the FDNY, Ladder 27, Bronx, in 1955, and retired from Ladder 39 in 1974. He was also retired from Metal Lathers Local 46 of NYC. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USS Albireo in Japan.
He moved his family from the Bronx to Worley Heights in Monroe in 1964. In 1983, he relocated to Florida, where he resided in Palm Bay and, later, (Gulfport) St. Petersburg. He returned to Washingtonville in 2007, where he lived until he entered the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in December 2008.
He is survived by his three children, Mary Ann McCarthy of Washingtonville, NY, Joseph Werner of Phoenix, Arizona, and Donna Cheslick of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughters, Sierra and Katelyn Cheslick; a niece, Barbara Halaychik of Middletown, NY and a nephew, Frederick Werner of Waterbury, CT. He was predeceased by his former wife, Theresa (Terry) O'Rourke Werner, and his brother, Frederick W. Werner.
His family would like to thank the nurses, staff, and volunteers at Hospice for the compassionate care that they gave Raymond as much comfort as possible during his final weeks.
At Raymond's request, there will be no visitation. A Graveside Memorial Service will be later in the Spring at St. Mary's Cemetery, Washingtonville.
