Mary Konrad, 93 a long time resident of Middletown, NY died peacefully and well cared for at Valley View Rehabilitation Nursing Care Center on Thursday, January 3, 2013. She was born in Northampton, PA to Joseph and Maria Schaffer. At age 2 she moved with her family to Austria where she lived, until age 16. At that time she returned to the U.S. and lived in NYC where she worked and met her future husband Joseph Konrad. They married in 1940 and spent 58 happy years together until Joseph's death in 1998.
Mary was a past member of the German American Club in Middletown and attended Mulberry House Senior Center for many years. She enjoyed dancing the waltz and polka at weddings and German dances. Her family was most important to her and she loved to cook and bake her Austrian specialties for them.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Betty Pollock of Middletown; her beloved granddaughters and their husbands, Carolyn Lattimer and husband Tom Fallon of Monroe and Debbie Cuddy and husband Patrick of Goshen. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Gisela Gorz of Kulm, Austria and Hilda Lendl and husband John of Waterloo Ontario, Canada; brother-in-law, Fred Ball of Goshen and sister-in-law Tessie Kistner of Circleville. She is also survived by a large extended family of nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, her brother, Joseph Schaffer and sisters, Paula Toth and Rosa Taschler.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff and residents of the Rehab Unit of Valley View for their excellent care and concern for Mary. Special thanks to the nursing care and medical staff on Unit C-100. Thanks also to the Physical, Occupational, Speech and Recreational Therapists.
Visiting hours are Sunday, January 6, 2013 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Donovan Funeral Home, Inc, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 7 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 149 Cottage St., Middletown, NY. Burial will be in Hamptonburgh Cemetery, Campbell Hall, NY at a later date.
