Richard F. Schlag, 83, of Campbell Hall, NY and Naples, Florida passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 in Naples, FL after a long illness.
Richard was born on January 1, 1929 in Allentown, PA, the son of the late Otto and the late Cecelia (Doll) Schlag.
He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army signal corp. He proudly wore the badge of a New York City Police Officer until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and travelling. He loved to read and could always be found in his chair with a great book. Rich was a great conversationalist who would strike up a conversation with perfect strangers and would leave with a new friend. He was an avid letter writer, whose words of wisdom, life lessons, wit and sense of humor warmed our hearts and will be cherished forever.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 60 years, Elaine (Henley) Schlag; his beloved children, Lynda Kerrigan and husband Patrick of Middletown, Lisa Brent of Wurtsboro, Ray Schlag and his wife Cindy of Campbell Hall, and Eileen Della Paoli of Aventura, FL; the pride of his life, his grandchildren, Ryan, Kaitlyn, Meghan, Erin, Danielle, Ashley, Anthony, Ariel, Laina and Michael; his great grandchildren, Kyle, William and Kayden. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Schlag and his wife Sam; cousin and friend Larry Grossman and his wife Linda, and many relatives and friends who were so dear to his heart.
Richard was a kind and generous man. He was the foundation of his family, whose unending love, sense of humor and warm smile touched the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will forever be remembered as a devoted, loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great grandfather and friend. The world is a better place for his having lived.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 22 from 1:00PM - 4:30PM at the Donovan Funeral Home, Inc, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY.
The funeral will be held 10:30 am on Monday, January 23 in the funeral home, with Pastor David Kingsley officiating. Burial will follow in Slate Hill Cemetery, Goshen.
Memorial donations may be made in Richard's name to the Wolf Conservation Center, South Salem, NY or a charity of your choice.
