My condolences to the Hoens family. I had known Lew for over 25 years with NYCT and MNR. Lew had always been a gentleman, a true professional, and considered an industry friend in Rail. He will be missed by many. May he rest in peace.

What a sad surprise - no shock - it was to learn last week that Lew had passed away.
I new Lew for almost a decade, we worked together on a dual mode locomotive specification and on the actual project for Metro North. Although a professional relationship, working with Lew was always target oriented, friendly, funny and inspiring.
My condolescenses to his family, particularly to his wife and kids, Lew will be sorely missed.
May he rest in peace,
Michael Latour, ex-Siemens

It came to me as a surprise and makes me very sad, especially for Lew's family.
I had the privilege working together with Lew in a rolling stock project of new locomotives. We shared a lot of things, professionally and privately, and always remained in close contact. I appreciated a lot working with him.
Business trips to Europe, California, New York were all made very enjoyable by Lew's way of creating a great team spirit.
I miss these moments.
May he rest in peace.

I first met Lew when he first transitioned to Metro-North Capital Rolling stock from NYC transit (circa 2008). We had a lot in common, with respect to our education (both NYIT alums), interests and even our friends (and supervisors). Lew always had a lot energy and enthusiasm for the job and the profession (Engineering). That's something that strongly bound us together.
With Lew we could talk about anything and we could disagree about anything, yet it never turned adversarial because he was a fun-loving guy and we would always look forward to the next chat with each other, forgetting the past -- like brothers, like family.
My sincerest sympathies and prayers go out to his family -- I will always remember Lew and I am going to greatly miss him, we had some really good times!

I have known Lew as far back as my New York City Transit days in downtown Brooklyn when we both started our careers in public transportation. We worked on many rail projects over the years, directly and indirectly, he as the engineer and I as the contract administrator.
One thing besides the professionalism we had with one another, we shared a common thread as parents and in so, sharing a gambit of our successes and failures. His children and mine are in the same age group. I used to comment on how skinny he was and that he should have some "Jamaican food". He said "yes, I'll eat that but I'm not growing any dred-locks for nobody". That was his humor and he made working fun and enjoyable, even at times when it's not. We constantly took pot-shots at one another like comedians on a stage.
I recalled one time when he didn't show up for work one time I rang him on his phone asking, "Where the hell are you?" He said, "Uhhhh, I broke my foot trying to ride my kid's skateboard." I laughed at him saying, "Stick to cutting the grass, you old fart!"
I just read an old text from him when we communicated on some legal issues with one of our MTA lawyers, which he was not shy on his feelings, calling their work, "phony-bologna". He noted that he had declined a meeting and that he just started his vacation.
I said, "Have a good time and enjoy your family, where ever you are. Stay out of the sun, you're pretty red already and you'll never get as dark as me."
He texted me back ".....racist" with a smiley face .
I responded with several smiley faces saying, "....prick."
My dear friend, Lew. I have to believe the good Lord called you back home for a reason; for his actions are always purposeful. And I and others have to endure your absence going forward. I will miss you dearly and I thank you for the many conversations we had. Be at peace and I will see you soon.
