I met Tom just once, but it was an encounter that I have never ever forgotten.
The encounter took place some 20 years ago. I was stranded in Goshen having flown from the UK to meet a resident in a Care Home in Goshen. The resident was a special person as he was the last remaining Holocaust Survivor of the Berlin Jewish Orchestra during the Third Reich. I was a young PhD student from the UK who had won a travel scholarship to visit the States to interview him. I had located him to a Care Home in Goshen which, only when I arrived, did I realise was just outside Goshen. I had arrived in Goshen from New York City by bus not really knowing where I was or how to get to the Care Home - and there were no taxis. My heart sunk as I had come all the way from the UK and had no way of getting to my final destination. I was beside myself facing the prospect of returning to the UK without meeting this very special person. Tom just happened to be in the shop and had overheard me explaining my situation to the shopkeeper at which point it became clear that there was nothing further I could do; the Care Home was further out of Goshen than I had realised. Tom immediately stepped in and offered to take me to the Care Home himself. What’s more, he then offered to collect me once I was done and take me back to pick up the bus. I was so touched by this pure kindness of a stranger. It has been an encounter I have never forgotten. Over 10 years later, we connected on Facebook.
Tom was such a lovely man and his kindness has stayed with me, and will always stay with me. I have recollected this story many, many times - and, as such, his legacy lives on. All my friends and family know about Tom. All my many students know about Tom too, as he is always my example of the impact of a random act of kindness.
It was a chance collision of paths where Tom extended such kindness that has lived with me ever since and always makes me smile broadly. I was so saddened to hear of his passing, so saddened. However, my lovely meeting with Tom will always stay with me and will never be forgotten.

It is with great sadness I learned of the passing of my cousin, Tommy. He was five days older than me and we shared some great times together. He was a kind person and so full of knowledge and passion about music, comedy, politics and many other things. He often would call my parents just to chat and they appreciated it. He took my family's 8 mm movies and compiled them on a DVD. He will be missed by many. Rest in peace Tommy.

I met Tom over twenty years ago and we remained extremely close . He was so good to my whole family including my late father and brother. Loved by all of us . My daughter remained close even though she moved down south. Tom was such a smart man ,could always make me laugh and was always teaching me to see the good in people no matter what . Tom was filled with love for everyone. It is impossible to not smile when thinking of him. I am so sorry for his family.

Tom was my friend and more for over 20 years . In those years he taught me so much about music , movies ,history , politics of course although we did not agree. Lol. He made me laugh a lot . We could talk for hours . Tom was a terrific listener a devoted friend caring , kind , funny , smart very smart. Miss him so very much .

Tom Degan was a friend of mine. He made sure you knew that he cared about you. I spent lot of time with the Degan Family during my teen and young adult years and that time has made an imprint on my life.

Our hearts are with the Degan family. Tom was a light that shone brightly to his family & friends. We were blessed to know him, share a laugh with him, and enjoy his Irish wit. Tom was a true gentleman,as if from an era gone bye. He would always don a sports jacket, and kiss the ladies hands hello, whilst calling you darling. He was one of the most well read people that I knew, always having his nose in a book about history, politics (let's not forget his love of the Kennedys), music, or film.He made everyone of his friends sit down and watch Charlie Chaplain films, and share in the discourse of the greatness of this or that Beatle song.
Yes, we will miss you Tom. We will miss your sweet humbleness, your love for humanity, and making every one of your friends, as well as family, feel special. May God Bless you & keep you, and make His face shine upon you, In Jesus Name, Amen!

Tom was a very close friend of my brother Paul. As a result I grew to love him too. May he Rest In Peace I will always think of Tom riding his bicycle around Goshen in a suit jacket and jeans! He also turned me on to Charlie Chaplin as a youngster. I feel blessed to have known him as I did!

I am reading this sad news on this cool December morning. Tom and I shared many beliefs and conversations via Facebook about social justice issues. I have shared The Rant many times. I am sorry he is gone, his writing will be missed. I know he carried some deep grief for those that went before. I pray he is resting in their arms and celebrating a life of effort at justice. He did well.
