In the summertime, my brothers and I would ride our bikes to Smiley’s farm, after supper, until dusk. Our idea of dusk differed from Mrs. Smiley’s. When she thought we had stayed too late to get home before dark (even though she highly “encouraged “ us to leave earlier), she would tell us to load our bikes in their truck because she was taking us home. Then we got in trouble at home, for making her do that.
Then there was the time she caught Edith steadying an ice chest that was on a chair that was on a table, while I precariously stood on the ice chest trying to climb in a partially opened high window of a certain house. “I don’t believe what I am seeing”, was all she said!
She was like a second mother to me. I will forever cherish my memories.
