John posted a condolence

My sincere condolences to the Cameron Family. John Barkley Cameron was my father’s friend since kindergarten and I grew up hearing story after story of the both of them and Roger and Steve and Gerry. When I was a young lad I made a serious mistake and I called Barkley for advice. He did not bat an eye and was instrumental in my navigating a precarious situation and for that I am forever grateful. He treated me like family and will always be Uncle Barkley to me.

I first met John in the fifth grade at St Rose of Lima Parish. We have remained close to each other for all these years.
In the parish we sold chances to support the January coal collection. John consistently won the prize for the most chances sold. I begged him to show me his secret. At his instruction I followed him to the neighboring parish that did not have a school and was located on a BMT subway stop. John worked the folks coming home from work, and people were more than happy to buy chances from this charming salesman and once again, despite competition from me, he won the prize.
None of John's friends called him anything but Barkley. He'll always be Barkley to me!
Barkley's Dad would drop us off at streams and lakes in Westchester where we could fish for trout and bass. His Dad would return after a couple of hours to pick us up. His Dad was a saint .One time, while fishing on the banks of a stream near Armonk we noticed there were several black snakes on the shoreline. Of course we decided to catch them. We made forked sticks to pin the snakes down by the neck. We let them go except for the biggest which we kept to show Barkley's Dad to prove we our skill and ability as woodsmen.
Barkley had a great sense of humor. He was a natural storyteller who told many hilarious stories about the people he met when he became a lawyer.
I will miss him greatly! He was my brother, and my friend.

My brother John Barclay Cameron, "Barks" to me, was three years younger than me, but always looked out for his older sister and her sons. When we were young, I was his boss, I thought, until I was 12, when I told him to do something, he told me to do it myself, that was the end of my power over my brother. There is not one word to describe my brother, he was so many things. His love, kindness, compassion, caring, and sense of humor are just few of the many wonderful characteristics my brother brought to my life. I will love you forever.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of beloved John. I have known John since the late sixties when he was employed by the Rockland County Legal Aid and my law firm in Goshen needed an additional attorney. His writing skills impressed me so that he became a member of our firm and while he practiced law with us Supreme Court Justice Sweeny became impressed with his skills that he asked to borrow him for a year but after the year he continued working with the Judge and other Judges in the court system. John continued doing good selfless work in the practice of law for the benefit of lawyers and the public. His memory will continue. My condolences to his beloved wife, Walda, children, grandchildren and sister Anne. Joseph G. Owen, JSC Retired.

Walda - I just read this! I am so so very sorry for your loss! I ADORED John! He was such a wonderful person and he was so very kind to me always! I will miss him calling the office and stopping by! He was one of a kind! I wish I had stopped by to see him, something I will regret for the rest of my life! My deepest sympathies to you and the family at this very difficult time. He was just a bright light!
Love to you all!

John was married to my longest, dearest friend--making him a close second in terms of length and tied for first place in terms of the love in which I held him. He was a wonderful husband and father, a great friend, and a beautiful person.

I first met John in 1971 when he was working with Schleider and Owen. We worked together briefly but Johns abilities were easy to recognize. He also was very ethical and was a deep thinker with far more humility than the average attorney. His skills and ability were soon recognized by Hon. John Sweeney who selected him as a confidential law clerk. I didn't see John much over the next 45 years or so but we would occasionally speak by phone. John was a positive influence in my life and a great example of what qualities an attorney should display. He will be missed but his good deeds and great example will always be with me. Condolences to Walda and his family.

We are so saddened at the loss of John’s presence in our lives. As neighbors and precious friends, we could not have loved you and the family more if your blood ran through our veins. It was a privilege to have spent the last 42 years with John and our families raising our children together; celebrating milestones together, spending holidays together…
When we think of John, we smile, remembering his dry sense of humor. He always had a smile for you and we never heard him complain. His quiet modesty was very endearing.
Singing Christmas carols at the piano on Christmas night in days gone by was perhaps our favorite memory with John, the family and with Anne and her husband. I know my Bill shared my feelings. Rest In Peace John, knowing your life was a job well done. You gave your all and you will be sorely missed.
